Building careers in construction for Haringey’s youth

Wednesday, 13 January 2010

Haringey pupils looking for careers in construction are getting a double helping of assistance from Apollo Education, the school building specialist working on the Borough’s Building Schools for the Future programme.

Apollo has announced that it has teamed up with Haringey Education Business Partnership to bring industry know-how to the classroom, providing coaching and “hands on” education opportunities to students at the College of North East London (CONEL) who are studying for the Construction and Built Environment Diploma. Acting as a business partner supporting the course tutors, Apollo staff carry out the role of e-mail business buddy, where students can contact them directly for help and assistance with their course material. Students participating in the diploma programme have also attended Apollo’s Learning and Development Centre for a day, where design briefs have been set for students to work on in a business environment.

Involvement with CONEL and this partnership means Apollo is now working with every secondary school in the Borough, helping year 10 and 11 students learn about enterprise – fulfilling an important part of the curriculum.

Christine Lemmon, Community Investment Manger for Apollo Education, said: “Apollo’s partnership with Haringey EBP and CONEL is a great opportunity to bring our industry skills to the classroom and give many young people in Haringey their first taste of a career in construction by bringing learning to life.”

Arthur Barzey, Vice Principal (Business & Enterprise) of Woodside High School said: “As a Business and Enterprise specialist school, partnership with the Private Business sector is as essential part of our Specialist School Development Plan. Christine opened a plethora of opportunities through which Apollo can support Woodside High in providing an enriched curriculum for students with additional support, offering workshop and career advice session for parents as well as training for our Student Council. Apollo has been a real champion of education-business partnership, and their willingness to support has been fantastic.”

Apollo Education is delivering four new and refurbished schools for Haringey under the Building Schools for the Future programme, including new £28m facilities for Woodside High School in White Hart Lane, Wood Green.  Haringey’s BSF programme will see more than £200m spent on improving schools in the borough to help to improve the life chance of local children and young people.
