This modern, fully equipped library welcomed almost 1,300 visitors on its opening day, over twice the amount of the average daily figure prior to improvement works.
With new additions to the library, such as the self-service system, and introduction of Blu-ray films to their stock, the number of items loaned more than doubled in just one day.
The building, which closed to the public in September 2008, is the first Lottery funded library in the UK. With a national fall in library usage, it has undergone a major face-lift, to meet modern needs and expectations. Works included a glazed shop front style entrance, a new refreshment area, increased study space and a brand new roof.
This is a modern library for a modern generation. With a record amount of visitors on its opening day, I’m confident that John Harvard Library sets a standard for libraries of the future.
