Highlight Project
Elm Court School
The project breathed new life into the dilapidated Edwardian building, which was formerly the Strand Grammar School. Adapting an Edwardian property to meet BSF standards, presented the design and construction teams with a series of challenges as well as an opportunity to do something innovative and bold. The result, a striking marriage of the old with the new, has transformed the school into a community asset for future generations of local students.
Striking design features
Apollo carried out major improvements to the existing structure and successfully integrated a number of striking design features such as a new Ethylene Tetra Fluoro Ethylene (ETFE) covered atrium and glass-enclosed stairway. The ETFE atrium has the same transparency as glass but with only one-hundredth of the weight. It comprises a single-skin membrane roof system which reduces the amount of building materials required and enables the maximum natural light to be utilised within the building.
