The Michael Tippett School

A first for BSF

Winner of the 'Best Design for a New School' award at the Partnership for Schools (PfS) 'Excellence in BSF Awards'.  In addition to winning the top prize, the school also picked up the Judges' special 'Grand Prix' award.

A first for BSF In 2008 Apollo Education completed the design and construction of the first Building Schools for the Future (BSF) project for children with Special Educational Needs – also the first BSF school in London.

The Michael Tippett School in Lambeth provides state-of-the-art facilities for 80 pupils between the ages of 11 and 18 with profound and multiple learning difficulties and forms part of £25Million BSF programme Apollo Education is completing for Lambeth.

The Michael Tippett School is regarded as a flagship project for the BSF programme and has received endorsement from Tim Byles, Partnerships for Schools Chief Executive, who described it as his ‘favourite building of 2008’.

The facility provides a fully inclusive learning environment both internally and externally, including a learning and sensory garden, hydrotherapy pool and community hall.

Sustainable design, thoughtful construction

The building is of a contemporary design with timber-clad external walls, aluminium composite windows and curtain walling. Its energy-efficient features include:

  • A cultivated green roof.
  • A Combined Heat and Power plant.
  • Under-floor heating.
  • A Building Management System to control the temperature throughout the building.

Apollo achieved Considerate Constructor Scheme scores of 39.5 out of 40 at its inspection.
