Project Focus

Salvation Army Corps Development

Apollo Public Buildings worked in collaboration with the Salvation Army to build a contemporary new Corps development in Chelmsford, Essex.

The £1.92 million project included the demolition of an existing run-down Salvation Army Worship Hall, which had been originally constructed on the site of a Roman well.  The rebuild of the development not only resulted in modern new premises for the Salvation Army but also gave an opportunity for the Essex County Council (ECC) Field Archaeology Unit to investigate any further Roman finds.  Apollo incorporated additional time into the programme of works to allow for an archaeological dig in which Roman pottery was discovered.

The resulting new facilities are both cutting edge and functional in design featuring zinc cladding, under-floor heating and acoustic panels.
Created by Apollo using a sustainably sourced timber-frame engineered system, the Corps now features a Worship Hall, administration areas and a drop-in centre for use by the local community.

During the project, Apollo also carried out mechanical and electrical works, external hard and soft landscaping, and highways works to create a new drop-off zone and parking area.

Taking an inclusive, considerate approach to the work, Apollo kept local residents and businesses informed of progress throughout.  The community investment team also liaised with the groups of people using the building to organise events such as an art project on the site hoardings and built a strong relationship with the medical surgery local to the new building to ensure consistent adequate accessibility for patients.
