Apollo Dragons coach Woodside winners

Following entrepreneurial TV show format, Woodside Healthy Youngers’ concept, The Cool and Healthy Vending Machine, has received £1000 funding from My Bank, the school bank run by pupils of Woodside. Further funding and business knowledge support in developing their business plan is being offered by the Dragons who were wowed by the groups’ enthusiasm and the effort they put into researching their target audience and competition. Their idea was to have a vending machine that provides a healthy alternative to crisps, chocolate and fizzy drinks. By utilising the schools’ kitchen and staff, this machine would not only provide its customers with healthier snacks, but would also be more cost efficient than the existing ‘junk food’ option.

Community Investment Manager, Christine Lemmon, and Divisional Director, Duncan Clark were invited by Woodside to join the team of Dragons. The lead Dragon, Marilyn Donahue is also founder of the Sustainable Education Project (SEP), an organisation which helps teachers and students develop hands-on projects for their schools. Marilyn set the challenge for the students, asking them to look at; water energy; minimising and recycling waste and litter; transport and healthy living; and biodiversity in school grounds.

Divisional Director, Duncan Clark: said: “The students did an incredible job putting together projects and delivered thought provoking presentations. It was a pleasure to be invited to be a Dragon and I look forward to helping the winners make their vision a reality.”

Zara Cheng, teacher and member of the Business and Enterprise Team at Woodside, said: “Transforming a vision into a reality is every entrepreneur's dream and this will no doubt enthuse and motivate students to come up with even more innovative ideas. Training them to have an enterprising, entrepreneurial and aspiring attitude is what this competition is all about.”

Listed building lights up the Thames

After almost a year-long major programme of works, the official completion ceremony was attended by the Mayor of Deptford, Hyde Housing and Apollo representatives, as well as many of the buildings’ residents.

Apollo’s work with Hyde Housing has brought Foreshore and its neighbouring Albemarle building up to the Decent Homes standards, while introducing features to improve visibility and safety to residents. Secure door entry systems have been installed with intercom and key fob access and poorly lit external areas have now been revamped with security lighting and decorative iron gates. Hidden and redundant areas are therefore closed off, upgrading the overall look of the building. Landscaping works to the gardens of both buildings have also drastically improved the look of the properties for residents and visitors that pass though the Pepys Estate.

Peter Maddison, Head of Projects, The Hyde Group commented: “Apollo built a very good rapport with the local community and delivered a high quality works programme that will enhance and prolong the life of these beautiful buildings.”

Apollo hosts biggest Building Challenge at St Ignatius College

The pupils were split into teams of five, each taking a specific construction job role: Project Manager, Site Engineer, Buyer, Quantity Surveyor or Builder. The aim was to accurately replicate a model, which had been tailored to suit the age and abilities of the pupils, while working to a budget. The model could only be viewed by certain members of the team to ensure the children learnt skills in communication, working as a team, problem solving and time management.

Apollo clients make shortlist for national competition

Each candidate now has up to £20,000 to undertake a feasibility study for submission at the end of October; the results of which will form the judging criteria for the overall winners who will receive up to £150,000 for a retrofit building project of their choice. The motivations behind this initiative are, among other factors, to help kick start the social housing retrofit market and associated UK business as well as to create exemplar retrofitted properties with radical and realistic solutions.

Andy Merrin, Environment and Sustainability Manager, said:

“Housing in the UK accounts for 27% of carbon emissions and more than 80% of the houses we will be living in by 2050 have already been built. The HCA has therefore recognised that to meet the UK’s target of an 80% reduction in carbon emissions by 2050, we must dramatically improve the performance of our existing housing stock.

“The key area of focus for this competition is on ambitious, cost-effective carbon and energy reductions with potential widespread application in low rise, whole house solutions. Our successful retrofit project with Barnet Homes proves that Apollo can deliver this and we are hopeful that at least one of our shortlisted clients will be among the 50 winners to receive this retrofit funding.”

Apollo will be working closely with Ascham Homes, Greenwich and Barnet Homes over the next few weeks to ensure the strongest possible cases are submitted.

The Apollo team worked with the centre – Young People March – during the summer holidays to help them design and create a “chill out” area in the centre’s garden as a memorial. Linda Plumb, Community Investment Manager for Apollo in the East of England organised the project.

She said: “We are always looking for ways to support the communities in which we work. As well as a memorial for Jake, this project helped the kids at the centre come to terms with the loss of their friend. It also enabled the young people to pick up construction skills during the build, as well as tips on handling budgets and finding deals on the marketplace.”

Jayne Maders, Co-Manager of Young People March, added: “We all wanted to do something in memory of Jake but we haven’t got any money so we were delighted when Apollo contacted us asking if there was any project they could get involved with.”

As well as supporting the youth at the centre, Apollo was able to give Jordan Moore from Orton Longville school the work experience he needed to complete his BTEC, by appointing him as trainee Project Manager over the memorial construction project. During the memorial event, Jordan was presented with a certificate for Outstanding Contribution to the project in recognition of the time and commitment he had invested. Natalie McCullough, Adam Stockbridge and Charlie-Jean Manders were also awarded certificates for their efforts.

Natalie said: “We did this garden for a fun, caring, loving young boy we all miss very much.
Salvation Army project wins RIBA awards

Designed by Hudson Architects, the striking building was one of 18 projects visited and one of 45 entered. The judges cited the simple concept and innovative construction as reason for the win.

The RIBA awards jury commented:“The Salvation Army building is dramatic, well-executed and minimalist, located in an ill-kempt environment beside the ring road. It is constructed of timber wall and roof panels, clad in zinc sheet and red composite board. The plan is clearly articulated and the building appears to work well for the very enthusiastic hands-on clients/users.”

Duncan Clark, Divisional Director on the project, added:“We’re delighted that the Salvation Army building has received such a major accolade. It was a challenging design to construct but Apollo’s team – Brian knight, Ian Black and Stuart Edwards – worked closely with the client's designers to ensure this award-winning result was delivered on time.”

Apollo awarded significant contract with Ducane Housing Association

The refurbishment aspect of the work is due to start in December 2009 and is targeted to achieve a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating, meeting the high environmental standards through fitting replacement windows and raising the thermal performance of the properties. The new build plans will see modular units added to the buildings as a new storey on top of the current five blocks and two new infill blocks. Approximately 20% of the energy for these new homes will be supplied on site through renewable sources, ensuring the properties meet the Code for Sustainable Homes Level 3.

Nick Ash, Regional Director for Apollo, commented: “We are delighted to have secured the opportunity to work with Ducane Housing Association and their project manager Robert Lombardelli Partnership.

Since the OFT’s investigation was announced in April 2008, Apollo has repeatedly made clear that it believes the allegations against it to be wholly unfounded.

Shortly after the OFT made its allegations, Apollo instigated its own investigation, led by a leading external law firm. No internal evidence substantiating the allegations was found.

The findings against Apollo relate to just three contracts from 2003-2004, cumulatively worth £1.25 million

Apollo has always operated to the highest ethical standards and will continue to do so.

To further assure ourselves and our clients that there are no current grounds for concern, we have taken additional steps to strengthen our competition compliance procedures.

Specifically, we have:·

Risk assessed all staff and rolled out a comprehensive internal training programme for all staff where competition law was identified as relevant to their role.·

Provided written guidance on competition compliance to all staff.·

Established new internal controls to ensure that Apollo’s ongoing compliance with competition laws is actively and specifically reviewed in the context of each bid that is submitted.·

Designated Steve Allen, our Group Finance Director; as the board member responsible for monitoring competition compliance issues and as the main point of contact for staff and customers on these issues.·

Fully embraced the new UK Construction industry Competition Law Code of Conduct.

For further media information, please contact Katie Gauden (Communications Manager) on 01992 655778

Dave Sheridan, Chief Operating Officer for Apollo, said:“The housing sector has faced significant challenges over the past year so achieving higher levels of efficiency and cost savings are a priority to our customers. Reducing waste, and addressing the issue in the early stages of a project, provides a key opportunity for us to achieve this aim. Signing the Halving Waste to Landfill Commitment is therefore an important strategic move for Apollo and we will be working with WRAP in the coming months to achieve further savings across our business.”

WRAP is currently supporting Apollo to identify best practice in the area of waste across refurbishment and new build schemes. The company is also helping to outline ways of achieving greater efficiencies through more effective design, take-back schemes, assessment of wastage allowances and innovative procurement.

Dr Mike Watson, Head of Construction at WRAP, said: “We are pleased that Apollo Property Group has committed to play its part in halving the amount of construction, demolition and excavation waste going to landfill by 2012, demonstrating how seriously they take the issue of waste. Their involvement will be key to helping reduce the 25 million tonnes of construction waste, which is dumped in landfills every year.”

Apollo shortlisted for national CORGI award

This award, which recognises companies implementing initiatives with a significant impact upon gas safety, is being judged by industry experts and winners will be announced on 10 September during a black-tie event attended by 1,000 guests.

Tony Leach, Safety, Health & Environment (SHE) Director, said:

“It really is an achievement just to be shortlisted for this award. Apollo’s considerable investment into the ‘STARS & STRIPES’ campaign, that was designed to tackle the challenges of improving gas safety amongst those with limited or no knowledge, shows just how seriously we take gas safety. As our CEO Rob McGregor once said, undertaking any kind of construction works without sufficient awareness of gas safety is ‘...like playing with a loaded gun’.

“Following the launch of the initiative earlier this year, approximately 350 direct employees and over a thousand subcontractors have already been put through our bespoke training session, which means vastly improved levels of gas safety awareness among non-specialists that may come into contact with a gas-related incident on our sites. What’s more, our smartly-designed pocket cards are proving a great success as an ongoing ‘back of the pocket reminder’ of the key steps to successful gas safety.”

Considered “the Oscars” of the heating & plumbing industry, the CORGI Awards seek to recognise and reward achievements in customer service, safety, environmental responsibility and training. Apollo is one of four companies shortlisted for the ‘Safety Initiative of the Year’ award.

Our seventh year at CIH, the UK’s leading social housing exhibition, Apollo easily met the challenge of creating a stand that was more eye-catching and sophisticated than ever before. Incorporating our refreshed brand livery – vibrant lime green, deep racing green and pure white – with a sleek new modular design, the stand attracted a healthy number of passers-by and proved an effective venue for meetings with current and potential clients.

Mick Grist, Business Development Director, comments:

“As Apollo grows into a national provider of integrated property services, it is important for us to invest more heavily in brand-building activities that promote our business as a significant industry player. CIH Harrogate is one of the major social housing events in the UK and it helps to keep us front of clients’ minds for relevant social housing projects.”

Perhaps the most successful element of the event for Apollo was the dinner held independently at the Holiday Inn on Tuesday 16 June. Attended by almost 120 clients and associates, the dinner allowed Apollo to thank valued clients for their ongoing commitment and support, while providing an opportunity to build even stronger relationships with them.

The best-attended yet, this year’s annual dinner saw cricket-legend, Geoff Miller amuse the room with tales of sporting antics before a raffle was drawn with prizes that included signed cricket memorabilia. Apollo’s COO, Dave Sheridan also took to the stage to thank everyone for coming, review the previous year and look forward to the years ahead.

Dave Sheridan comments:

“It’s been a tough financial year for everyone so it was important not to brush over this fact during my brief talk. However, the evening was about thanking clients and building relationships with them so we ensured the atmosphere remained light and relaxed. I spoke of some of the new appointments we’ve made to strengthen the Apollo business over the past few months and the growth of the company as we become a national provider of integrated property services. We received some excellent feedback suggesting that next year will be even bigger and better attended!”

Apollo has already booked the same stand (Hall B, Stand 134) for CIH Harrogate in 2010 and has made arrangements for the networking dinner to take place again on the same night next year.

Apollo helps Roddons with model tenants reward scheme

The Apollo and Roddons teams worked around the clock to give Jo Page’s two-bedroom home in Tydd St Gile a makeover, in just seven days. A delighted Jo was handed the keys to her revitalized home on Thursday 4 June as reward for being a model tenant.

Jo is a nursing assistant and has been living in the Roddons property for six years together with her son Jez. Their home makeover included the fitting of new wooden doors, new architrave and skirting, new fitted carpets, work on the chimney and decoration work in various rooms.

Jo said: “I am thrilled! Thanks to everyone from Roddons and Apollo for making it happen. My home is my castle and I believe it is a great concept to reward the ‘good’ tenants. It really shows that we can make a difference and that Roddons cares about its tenants.”

The ‘Roddons Rewards’ scheme was brought to life in November ‘08 to show residents how the housing association appreciates and values residents’ efforts in keeping to their tenancy agreement and staying up to date with the rent payments. Every six months, Roddons, in conjunction with Apollo Housing, is giving away one main prize, worth up to £2,000, where the winner will be able to choose a home or garden makeover. The rewards scheme also contains special holiday and quarterly prizes, worth £250.

Peter Fulcher, Regional Director for Apollo, said: "Throughout Apollo's Decent Homes work for Roddons, we have enjoyed meeting many local residents and getting involved in the community. When the prize-winner was announced for Roddons Rewards we were only too happy to help and hope Ms Page enjoys her rejuvenated home."

The scheme guidelines were agreed with the support of tenant representatives of the Resident Involvement Tenants Advisory Group. All tenants who meet the criteria are automatically entered into the prize draw.

Financial Reorganisation

The main driver for this reorganisation was to create an environment where BoS are able to transfer their 20% stake in the business to another party as part of their syndication of the BoS portfolio. The 80% held by management is not for sale.

This opportunity has also created significant benefit to Apollo in a further two ways.

i) It repairs the erosion in potential shareholder value that has been caused by the collapse in the economy

ii) It enhances the financial flexibility that will allow Apollo to make some acquisitions that will support the delivery of our business vision; to become a significant national provider of integrated property services to social housing, educational facilities and public buildings

Apollo is delighted to have achieved this and we can also confirm that Lloyds’ decision does not affect the running of the company. Apollo continues to be a strong, successful and profitable business focussed on delivering an excellent service.

For further media information, please contact Camargue on 020 7636 7366.

Apollo joins low carbon housing campaign

Supported by many leading energy and housing organisations and chaired by WWF-UK, the EHA's campaign is for all sectors to ‘play their part in making sustainable low carbon homes a reality across the whole of the UK's housing stock’.

Dave Sheridan, the Apollo Group's chief operating officer, said: "Improving the energy efficiency of existing homes goes a long way to lower the UK's impact on the environment and also saves residents money on energy bills.

"Apollo Housing is leading the way, evidenced by our eco retrofitting programme unveiled at EcoBuild and in our work for Barnet Homes and other clients. "If we as a country are serious about reducing our carbon footprint, there needs to be nationwide schemes encouraging the efficient environmental retrofitting of social and privately owned homes. That is why Apollo supports EHA's campaign."

You can find out more about the work of the Existing Homes Alliance at www.existinghomesalliance.org

Apollo wins 20 CCS Awards

The Considerate Constructors Scheme issues national awards for those sites where construction companies go the extra mile. The areas examined in the awards include keeping waste, unnecessary traffic and noise to a minimum, while providing good working environments for staff.

One Contracts Manager, James Darker, won a hat-trick of awards. James, who manages Apollo’s ‘Decent Homes’ refurbishment of Ascham Homes’ properties in Walthamstow, scooped the awards for the way he has ensured his sites are clean, safe, and a good neighbour.

As there was no ‘match ball’ to celebrate the hat-trick, Apollo arranged for Spurs fan James to receive a signed Tottenham shirt from legendary ex-Spurs and England centre forward, Martin Chivers, who now represents ADAS Asbestos Specialists.

James said: “It is a great honour to have been recognised for my team’s hard work. Apollo’s partnership with Ascham Homes will deliver real improvements to local residents’ homes. It is critical that we concern ourselves not just with the finished product, but also ensure that the construction process is completed with the utmost regard for our neighbours.”

“Having Martin give me the award was superb”, said James. “With the great team behind me at Apollo, we’re already shooting for next year’s award.”

Apollo becomes an 'Investor In People' organisation

This much coveted award was confirmed on 17th December and accepted by Tim Hooper (above), a little over seven months after Apollo applied to begin the process.
Investor in People (IIP) seeks to help companies become better employers and is a standard against which an organisation’s people related processes are measured.

This covers areas such as the way staff are inducted, trained, developed and appraised.

The best part about becoming an Investor In People is that the assessment relies on the views of the staff and not simply on an administrative exercise.

In total over 115 staff interviews took place, both in formal groups and informally in the offices and on site.

Our assessor Allan Churchman asked to be allowed to speak to anyone he chose and on his site visits he spoke to residents, subcontractors and consultants as well as Apollo staff.

Andrew Edge, HR Director said: “This was certainly a rigorous assessment that left no stone unturned.

"However, I had the fullest confidence that the enthusiasm for Apollo demonstrated by our staff would convince Allan that our Company was fit to become an Investor In People organisation.

"This is a great achievement for every one of our employees.”

Based in Glasgow and operating across the whole of Scotland, the office will focus on offering a new build, maintenance and refurbishment service through the housing, education and public buildings sectors.

The new office is headed up by Regional Director, Eamonn McGarvey. Eamonn (pictured) and his team have over 20 years’ management experience of delivering successful projects in this sector.

Apollo’s expansion in Scotland will target the Scottish Housing Quality Standard programme, which has been worth over £1 billion in Scottish Government funding to date, and will continue through to 2015.

This mirrors the Group’s wider growth in England in recent years, delivering substantial housing refurbishment schemes under the English Decent Homes Standards, as well as Building Schools for the Future – a school buildings investment programme.

Eamonn said: “We continue to evolve our business proposition in relation to the current trends in social housing, where consolidation of housing associations has led us to new geographical areas.

“Social housing stock still needs to be improved, and with the larger housing associations pressing ahead with their programmes, this corner of the market is likely to be buoyant for some time.

“Apollo is more than just another property services company – our work helps to change people’s lives and transform communities. We have an experienced team on board and the stage is set for Apollo to become major player in Scotland.”

Rob McGregor, Managing Director of the Apollo Group, said: “This opening is a major milestone for Apollo. Eamonn and his team bring experience as well as fresh ideas and their work will bring real benefits to clients.”

The new Scotland office is part of the Group’s broader business strategy of growth across the UK, and follows recent office openings in Peterborough, Kent and Dorset.

Eco-home cuts energy consumption

The house, which is an exemplar for sustainable refurbishment in the area, returns to London Borough of Barnet’s council house pool having seen its energy efficiency increase from 54 per cent (category E) to 81 per cent (category B) as measured by the Standard Assessment Procedure.

The terraced home in Berkeley Crescent, East Barnet, has been transformed into an eco show home, initially, for Barnet residents to see the measures they can take to make their homes greener and reduce their energy bills.

It is estimated that the refurbishment will make a 64% saving in running costs. Apollo Housing’s role was to design, project manage and implement the works, in partnership with Energy Solutions, a North-West London-based advisory service.

Among other initiatives, the property has been fitted with a solar water heating system, 'A' rated kitchen appliances, loft and ground floor insulation, a boiler energy manager and low energy light bulbs, light-reflecting paint and extractor fans.

A rainwater butt has been installed in the garden, while taps, shower heads and toilets are 'low flow'. The parking area has a surface designed to let water soak away naturally, rather than run off and cause possible flooding.

The property also has a secure cycle store to help encourage healthy living as part of a green lifestyle.

Steve Page, Contracts Manager at Apollo Housing, said: “There is growing political will to environmentally retrofit social and affordable housing, not just in London but across the country. The Barnet eco home provides an excellent example of what can be achieved in an efficient and cost-effective manner.”

Vi Britchfield, chair of Barnet Homes, said: “I’m pleased Barnet Homes has been able to work with Apollo on this important project. It shows how simple measures can stack up to help our environment, and benefit our tenants financially.

"This house has cut its carbon dioxide emissions by an impressive 52 per cent. We will be monitoring this home when it is re-let to see what measures are most worthwhile installing in our homes for the future.”

Gold for green project

Apollo’s eco-home project won the London Borough of Barnet’s Considerate Contractor Scheme Gold Award after exceeding standards required by a voluntary code of practice.

Contracts Manager, Steve Page, said: “It is important to emphasise the importance of team-work on this project because if we hadn’t worked so closely as a team we would never have delivered it so successfully.”

The Barnet scheme works on similar lines to the National Considerate Constructors Scheme and aims to raise the general standards of work.

Once they have joined, contractors are required to abide by a voluntary code of practice which says all work must be carried out safely, cleanly and in a way that will not inconvenience others.

As well as the Gold award, Barnet’s Considerate Contractor Scheme has two other levels of achievement – Silver for those meet the requirements and Bronze for members who don’t reach the standard but whose efforts are still considered worthy of recognition.
